-Solaris/Unix
Fundamentals
The Solaris
Fundamentals course is designed for users and entry-level systems
administrators who need the knowledge and skills necessary to work
in the UNIX environment. Users already familiar with the UNIX environment
will benefit from the sections of the course specific to Sun Solaris.
Entry-level system administrators tasked with performing user level
file, disk and print management will be provided with an overview
of file, disk, print, and environment management. This course is
an entry point for Solaris system administration courses.
Course
Description:
- Become familiar
with shells and commands common to all versions of UNIX
- Use UNIX
shells and commands to customize and enhance the Sun Solaris 8
user environment
- Create and
modify files using the vi text editor
- Understand
& navigate the Solaris/UNIX file system, and work with files
and directories
- Schedule
the execution of Solaris commands, and manage system processes
- Understand
file system security concepts, and protect files and directories
using file system permissions
- Understand
the basics of Solaris/UNIX shell programming.
- Introduction
to the Common Desktop Environment (CDE), Explore the CDE graphical
interface, and manage files, programs and applications using Solaris
graphical utilities
- Introduction
to Solaris operating system, and it's fundamental capabilities
- Log in to
Solaris servers across the network and access file and print resources
Prerequisites:
Experience with other computer operating systems, especially MS-DOS
or VMS is a definite plus, but not a requirement. Networking and
end user experience in a windowing environment would be very helpful.

-Solaris
System Administration part I
This course
is part I of a 2-part series for system administrators who want
to learn how to administer a Solaris 8 environment. In this 5-day
hands-on course you will learn how to set up, configure, and manage
a Solaris 8 environment including upgrades and patches, real world
and third party tools, file directory and file system, disaster
recovery backup and restore, user administration and device management.
Students taking this class will gain the necessary knowledge and
skills to perform these essential system administration tasks in
the Solaris operating environment. A series of lab exercises will
provide opportunities for knowledge testing throughout the course.
Our Solaris 8 courses will help you to prepare for Solaris 8 System
Administration certification.

set file permissions using ACLs (Access Control Lists)

8 device naming conventions to configure, name and manage devices
- Monitor and
mount file systems including CD-ROM and PC floppy devices
- Use the
format utility to display information and set up disk partitions
- Implement
basic system security
Who should attend?
System administrators, System Managers, System Analyst, Web Administrator,
Database Administrator, Network Engineers tasked with performing
essential system administration procedures in the Solaris operating
environment. UNIX knowledge, experience using UNIX Shells, Commands,
and Shell programming, plus some knowledge of system administration
tasks and responsibilities is a plus. Ideal candidates should have
taken Solaris/Unix Fundamentals Class.

-Solaris
System Administration part II
This course
is part II of a 2-part series for system administrators who need
the advanced skills necessary to manage Solaris servers. In this
5-day hands-on course you will learn how to work with the hardware
and file systems, tune the kernel, and configure the network for
optimal reliability and performance. You will also learn how to
set up, configure and troubleshoot Solaris services like DNS, NFS,
NIS, and NIS+. The course covers system monitoring and capacity/performance
analysis. Frequent, practical lab exercises provide opportunities
to reinforce class material and to apply newly acquired skills.

Solaris for Maximum Reliability and Performance

event logging with syslog
- Administer
the CDE (Common Desktop Environment)
- Create virtual
disk based systems

Who
should attend?
Solaris administrators who want to improve their skills should attend.
Experienced non-Solaris system administrators who will be working
with Solaris should also attend. User level UNIX experience (with
any version of UNIX or Solaris) is assumed. Basic system administration
experience including managing users and file systems is also assumed.
Solaris 8 System Administration I or equivalent knowledge and experience
is required.

-Solaris
Network Administration
This course
teaches students advanced administration skills needed to create,
administer, and tune a local-area network (LAN) using subnetting
and routing for Solaris 8 workstations. It is designed for experienced
Solaris or UNIX System V administrators who need a structured learning
experience to optimize their network of systems. This course provides
hands-on with network configuration and remote installation procedures,
advanced security, and troubleshooting techniques, how to customize
SendMail, network application tools, and name service configuration.

International Organization for Standardization/Open Systems
- Interconnection
(ISO/OSI) and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) layers

major TCP/IP protocols

and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) services

DHCP clients and servers

Experienced Solaris or UNIX System V administrators who have successfully
completed systems administration program part I & II or have
equivalent knowledge.
