What
is Linux?
Linux, an open-source variant of Unix, was developed in the mid
1990's on just a few systems. Today an estimated eight million computers
use Linux.
The Linux+ program at Accent Technology is designed to teach basic
installation, operation, administration, and troubleshooting services
for Linux operating system on workstations and servers. With the
tremendous investment in Linux by large companies, knowledge of
this system can result in attractive job placement opportunities.
Contributors
A group of companies came together to write the Linux+ certification.
Their goal was to define the job tasks of Linux professionals. This
work resulted in the certification we have today. The companies
involved in the project are:
- Caldera
- Compaq
- Hewlett Packard
- Intel
- Linux Professional
Institute
- Prosoft Training
- Sair
- TurboLinux
The Course
Accent Technology teaches Linux+ in a blended learning environment
as we do with all courses that we offer. This course combines written
manuals; computer based training, classes, hands-on labs, and simulated
examinations. Sixty hours of classes are provided.
As with all Accent Technology programs, class size is guaranteed
not to exceed 10 students, providing for the optimum learning conditions.
Three hundred hours of hands on lab exercises are required for the
program, enabling the students to acquire the practical competencies
that will be needed not only during job placement but also in practical
applications.
The
Instructor
Jim Galfano, Head IT manager for the City of Tracy, teaches Linux
at Accent Technology. All Accent Technology instructors are required
to work in the field full time and teach on a part time basis, a
significant benefit for the students. Jim Galfano has been teaching
Linux, Unix, Microsoft MCSE and A+ for nearly 15 years.
Jim not only motivates our students, but ignites a passion for the
Linux program and IT field.
